How to Choose the Right Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is choosing a name that will represent you, your business or your hobby. You want a name that is easily remembered so people can revisit your site, something catchy. When creating your domain name you need to know a few basic facts before you actually choose your name. Your domain name can be up to 67 characters long, you can use alphanumeric characters as well as hyphens. The name cannot begin of end with the hyphen, but can contain one or more of them. You will also have to choose a suffix for your domain, which are called top level domains (TLD). Here is a list of the most common TLDs and what they are usually related to:

.com commercial business & personal domain

.net commercial network

.org nonprofit organizations

.co.uk commercial business & personal domain for the UK

.edu educational institution

.gov government agency

.mil military

There are other TLDs but they are less common. Now that you have a few basics down you can start to brainstorm your domain name. Keep in mind that there are already 128 million domains already registered and thousands are being added on a daily basis. So do not get frustrated if you run into your name already being used, just keeping going. To start you should make a list of words that relate to the content of your site. Now with this list put some of the words together and see what combination you can come up with. Try using different forms of the word to get a different result; sometimes this makes the name sound better. One thing to think of about the number “0”, try to avoid using it alone, it can easily be confused with the letter “O”. If you name is chosen already try adding a hyphen of number and then you make find your domain is available in that form.

Now you have your name, get it registered before someone else does! If you are going to be running a business from the domain name you may want to register as many of the extensions of it as possible. Then simply route all these names to your main site, this way you get all the traffic.
